Electronics Framework 2027-2035

Building Africa's Electronics Value Chain

  • Affordable Land Access: Governments are encouraged to offer land to zone developers on fair long-term leases or favourable terms, particularly for projects that create many jobs.
  • Sector-Specific Clusters: Special economic zones can host industrial parks and clusters, such as textile parks, automotive zones, biotechnology hubs and electronics manufacturing zones.
  • Smart Zones: Make in Africa encourages smart infrastructure within zones, including real-time monitoring systems, efficient transport and energy management tools.

Make in Africa proposes this Electronics Framework 2027-2035 to help build a self-sustaining electronics value chain in Africa and reduce dependence on imports. Africa holds many of the minerals used in electronics, yet most of the value is added elsewhere. As the continent moves into Electronic System Design and Manufacturing (ESDM), we work to foster African innovation, component manufacturing and stronger exports.

This Framework focuses on building a regional supply chain for critical components such as semiconductors, PCBs, displays, batteries and telecom equipment, starting with assembly and moving up the chain. It also stresses nurturing start-ups and research hubs, and calls for partner countries to share technology and end tariff escalation on processed goods.

Vision for 2035

Africa as an Electronics Hub with a Full Value Chain

By 2035, this Framework proposes a thriving, more self-reliant electronics ecosystem across the whole value chain in Africa, reducing dependence on imports and raising African electronics manufacturing and exports. This shared roadmap includes:

  • Mobilising long-term investment across the electronics value chain, including semiconductors, displays, PCBs, batteries, telecom equipment and other components.
  • Supporting ESDM parks across the continent for semiconductors, displays, components, advanced batteries and PCBs, building a resilient and joined-up supply chain.
  • Creating skilled direct employment in electronics manufacturing and component production, driven by African expertise and talent.
  • Building a regional supply chain under AfCFTA to cut reliance on imports and strengthen electronics self-sufficiency in Africa.

Mission

Building Africa's Electronics Supply Chain

The mission of this Framework is to help build a strong electronics manufacturing ecosystem that fosters innovation, grows local production and supports self-reliance in critical components across Africa. It focuses on:

  • Advancing African Production: Prioritise local manufacturing of semiconductors, PCBs, displays and batteries, reducing reliance on imports.
  • Driving Comprehensive Investment: Encourage investment across the whole value chain, from mineral processing to finished goods, within regional industrial plans.
  • Fostering R&D and Start-ups: Support research in advanced technologies, including AI-powered devices, IoT solutions and 5G infrastructure, with technology sharing from partners.
  • Building a Skilled Workforce: Work with industry and universities across the continent to develop talent for the electronics industry.
