Members Referral Network

Growing Together Through Collaborative Networking

The Make in Africa Members Referral Network is more than a business platform. It is a community built on shared values, trust and the drive to succeed together. Its strength comes from the experience of members across the continent, which turns everyday introductions into lasting partnerships. Inspired by successful networking models, the Network fosters meaningful connections, facilitates business referrals and builds a culture of collaboration, so that more is bought, made and sold within Africa.

A Referral System That Goes Beyond Business

The Network fosters an ecosystem where members collaborate, support and grow together. At its heart is our Referral and IOU Programme, designed to ensure value exchange and mutual support. The programme encourages members to connect businesses, even beyond the network, and recognises such contributions with IOU notes, a token of commitment to return value in the future.

How the Referral and IOU System Works

The Referral and IOU Programme ensures that members engage with each other to fulfil business requests while keeping goodwill and accountability in balance. Here is how it works in two scenarios:

In-Network Referral

  • Step 1: Company A posts a request for a service (for example, website design).
  • Step 2: Company B, which offers website design, accepts the request and completes the work.
  • Step 3: As a network member, Company B offers Company A a member discount on the service.
  • Step 4: Both companies issue IOU notes to each other:
    • Company B issues an IOU to Company A, agreeing to offer referrals or value equal to the discount in future.
    • Company A issues an IOU to Company B, agreeing to provide referrals or equal value in future.

Out-of-Network Referral

  • Step 1: Company A posts a request for a service (for example, website design).
  • Step 2: No member of the network can fulfil the request.
  • Step 3: Company B knows a third-party provider, Company C (not part of the network), that can fulfil it.
  • Step 4: Company B introduces Company C to Company A, and the transaction is completed.
  • Step 5: Company A and Company B issue IOU notes to each other:
    • Company A issues an IOU to Company B for making the introduction.

Company B issues an IOU to Company A, acknowledging its future commitment to provide more referrals or equal value.

What Makes the Referral and IOU Programme Unique?

Value Exchange Without Immediate Payment

The IOU system encourages collaboration and goodwill by letting members exchange value without an immediate monetary transaction.

Mutual Accountability

IOU notes ensure that every referral and act of goodwill is recognised and recorded, creating a culture of reciprocity and trust.

Incentives for Collaboration

Members are motivated to take part, whether by fulfilling requests directly or by using their outside connections to find solutions.

Expanding Network Influence

Even when no member can supply a solution, members are encouraged to use their personal and professional contacts to add value, which strengthens the reputation of the whole network.

How IOU Notes Work

  1. Issuing IOUs
    • After a referral or completed transaction, both parties agree the value of the IOU and issue notes to each other.
    • IOUs are recorded digitally on the Make in Africa Members Referral Network platform for transparency and accountability.
  2. Redeeming IOUs
    • Members can redeem IOU notes for services, referrals or other contributions within the network.
    • Redemption is tracked, which keeps exchanges fair and balanced.
  3. Examples of IOU Transactions
    • A logistics company redeems an IOU for marketing advice from another member.
    • An SME uses IOU credits to get priority help on a future project.
