Agriculture and Food Processing Expert Committee

Keeping Africa’s Harvest Value at Home

The Agriculture and Food Processing Committee of Make in Africa brings together farming cooperatives, agribusiness leaders and policy experts from across the continent. Africa has the land, the young workforce and now a single continental market, yet far too much of its produce leaves as raw commodity and returns as processed food. The committee covers food security, livestock, horticulture, fisheries, floriculture, food processing, rural development and agricultural finance, and links farmers to processors and buyers.

Our Vision

Inclusive Growth in African Agriculture

To champion inclusive growth in African agriculture by creating opportunities for all, from smallholder farmers to large agribusinesses, and by keeping more of the value of what Africa grows on the continent.

Our Mission

Turning Advocacy into Action

Over the next two years, the committee will:

  • Identify Core Challenges – Listen to agribusinesses and smallholder farmers and name the barriers they face.
  • Policy Advocacy – Draft research-backed position papers for governments and partners, including an end to tariff escalation on processed food.
  • Promote Integration – Link retail chains and buyers with local producers and processors across regional value chains.
  • Encourage Partnerships – Press for fair public-private models and long-term purchase agreements tied to local processing.
  • Represent Industry Needs – Bring member input to governments and partners in clear, practical proposals.

Our Focus: Five Key Verticals

The committee works through five specialist verticals so its efforts stay focused:

Agriculture

Horticulture, pulses, grains and floriculture grown for African and export markets.

Food Processing

Value addition, regional trade and innovation, so processing happens here.

Livestock and Fisheries

Dairy, meat and fisheries for broader agricultural development.

Markets and Logistics

Food security, storage and cross-border movement of food within Africa.

Rural Development

Advice and fairly priced finance to empower rural communities.
