Africa imports most of its medical devices. Make in Africa proposes a different path. This MedTech Framework 2027-2035 is addressed to African governments, regional bodies and partner countries. It is a set of proposals, not law. It aims to help African engineers, clinicians and manufacturers develop medical devices, diagnostics and digital health tools for African needs.
The framework aims to improve healthcare delivery, patient outcomes and access to affordable technology. We work with governments, institutions such as Africa CDC, and private partners, and we ask partner economies for technology sharing, fair finance and open markets for African-made devices.
By 2035, this framework envisions a continent that designs and manufactures more of its own medical technology, with these shared objectives:
Make in Africa is dedicated to helping build a MedTech ecosystem that fosters innovation, jobs and better health across the continent. This framework focuses on:
We encourage African governments to simplify the process for MedTech investors and innovators, with single-window procedures, online applications and mutual recognition of regulatory approvals between countries. Make in Africa does not approve products. We guide firms to the authorised national regulators and advocate for harmonised, safe and timely processes.
This MedTech Framework is a proposal to help Africa make more of the technology its health systems depend on. By encouraging investment, building skills and harmonising standards, it supports countries as they move toward home-grown innovation and high-quality care.
Make in Africa invites MedTech companies, healthcare innovators and investors to join this journey and help build a sustainable, innovative MedTech industry across Africa.
